Dwight Hauff’s life is quite amazing and somewhat a testament to hard work, intellect, and ingenuity. Unfortunately, do to limitations of IG space we are forced to go to the “highlight reel.”

-Dwight Hauff graduated in 1926 from Morningside University, where he played basketball and baseball.

-In 1926, his senior year, Hauff was all conference in Basketball.

-In 1927, Hauff became a Math and Economics teacher, as well as a coach, at Merrill High School. After which, he planned to take over his father’s hardware store.

-1929 Stock Market Crashes.

-1929/30 Hauff goes to work for Spalding as a traveling salesman—in the Dust Bowl region—after his father is forced to close the family hardware store.

-1933 Spalding is forced to close its Sioux City location. In steps humble high school economics teacher who sees an opportunity not even the giants could see.

-Depression era continues and Spalding closes their next location in Omaha, Nebraska. Hauff again sees another opportunity and takes it over. (This is the location from where this jacket originated from.)

-Hauff knows numbers, knows sports, and knows people and opens up 3 more locations.

-Hauff continually works at the company day in and day out for the next 70+ years. Through WWII, Korea, Vietnam—when men were over seas fighting and help was thin—physically showing up and working.

-Becomes one of three father son businesses to ever sit as chairman of the NGSA.

-Hauff gets inducted into the National Sporting Goods Industry Hall Of Fame.

-In 2005, Dwight Hauff celebrates his 100th birthday and is officially recognized as America’s oldest worker, with an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

-July 24th 2009, Dwight Hauff, humble high school math and economics teacher, who through trials and adversity became one the heralding sporting goods stores in America, passes away at 104 years old.
